The lowdown:  'The Hound of the Baskervilles' is Arthur Conan Doyle's best-known and most popular Sherlock Holmes
story, and is one of only four full-length novels featuring the legendary detective. More than 20 different versions of thls
novel have been adapted for film and television, starring a range of actors in the lead role, including Basil Rathbone, Peter
Cushing, Jeremy Brett and Ian Richardson. In 1982, the BBC produced a four-part serial based on the novel, and starring
Tom Baker as Sherlock Holmes and Terence Rigby as Doctor Watson. Also watch out for a brief appearance byCaroline
John (Liz Shaw in Jon Perwee's first season). The serial was broadcast between 3 October and 24 October 1982.

The plot:  Dr Mortimer appeals to Holmes for help when his best friend, the wealthy Sir Charles Baskerville, is found dead
on the grounds of his estate. The official cause of death is heart failure, but Mortimer believes a family curse has struck
again. He tells Holmes and Watson of this curse, which has claimed many Baskervilles over the centuries, and takes the
form of a fiendish hound from hell. Sir Henry Baskerville, the sole heir of Sir Charles, plans to move from Canada to the
family estate, but Mortimer fears that his life too will be in danger. The mystery deepens when Sir Henry visits Holmes and
reports the theft of a brand new boot from outside his hotel room, while an old boot is also subsequently stolen. Holmes
send Watson to Baskerville Hall with Mortimer, where he will look into the affair and report back to Holmes, who has other
matters to attend to in London. Watson interviews a number of people who are associated with the Baskervilles, including
the servant Barrymore and his wife, and a naturalist called Stapleton who lives on the moors with his sister. Watson soon
discovers that the Barrymores are assisting a relative - Seldon - who has escaped from Dartmoor prison, and give him some
of Sir Charles's old clothes. Seldon is soon found dead, after being attacked by an unseen hound. Holmes arrives on the
scene and soon determines that rather than a supernatural beast, the hound is very real, and is being used by Stapleton
to eliminate the Baskervilles and claim his rightful inheritance. Stapleton turns out to be the younger brother of Sir Charles,
and had been presumed dead for many years.

The verdict:  This version of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' has largely been forgotten now, and has never been released on
VHS or DVD, although it was quite faithful to the original novel and has good production values for the time. Tom Baker was
an interesting choice to play Sherlock Holmes, although he is surprisingly good in the role. However, this was his first role
after leaving Doctor Who, and his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is far too reminiscent of the Fourth Doctor - not to mention
one keeps thinking of the Talons of Weng-Chiang when watching this  : )
