The
lowdown: 'The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling' is a superb
BBC adaptation of the Henry Fielding novel of the
same name. The five-part
miniseries was first broadcast on BBC1 on 9 November 1997, and stars Max
Beesley as
Tom Jones (not the Welsh
singer). It begins in 1725, when a wealthy Somerset landowner named Squire
Allworthy
returns from London and
finds a new-born baby sleeping in his bed. Allworthy decides to raise the
child as his own,
while Jenny Jones, the woman
who confesses to being the mother of the child, feels Somerset in disgrace.
The series
then chronicles the many
adventures and loves that Tom has after being banished from Allworthy's
estate, and his
efforts to gain the affections
of his one true love, Sophia Western. However, he has a rival called Blifil,
who also happens
to the the son of Squire
Allworthy's sister. After a series of misfortunes, Tom and Sofia are eventually
married, while
Tom learns the truth about
his parentage.
Sylvester McCoy plays the
role of a rather shady lawyer named Mr Dowling, who always manages to be
lurking in the
shadows, and unwittingly
plays a role in the events that see Tom banished from Allworthy's estate
(the letter that Mr
Dowling gives to Blifil
upon bringing news of his mother's death plays a crucial role in the events
that follow). McCoy is
excellent, and proves that
with the right role he can be a very good actor. Indeed, most of the cast
is excellent, although
Brian Blessed as the almost
constantly angry and shouting Squire Western is the standout. Aside from
McCoy and
Blessed, viewers will recognise
several other 'Doctor Who' alumni, including Camille Coduri as Jenny Jones,
Ron Cook,
Alexei Sayle and Roger Lloyd-Pack.
This mini-series is highly recommended for lovers of classic English literature.
And
at just over 300 minutes,
it is much easier to watch than reading the original novel : )
