The lowdown: 'In Search of the Castaways' is based on the 1867 novel of the same name by Jules Verne, and stars Maurice Chevalier as Jacques Paganel, who accompanies the children of Captain Grant on an international search for the captain and his ship, Britannia. Mary (Hayley Mills) and Robert Grant (Keith Hamshere) are convinced that their father survived the sinking of his vessel, as they have received a message in a bottle, which contains part of a map which is purportedly where he can be found. Paganel and Mary convince Lord Glenarvan to sail to South America in search of the missing Grant. Their travels encompass a number of countries and many adventures, including surviving an earthquake, floods and gunrunning pirates. Roger Delgado has a very brief role as a prisoner of the Patagonians. Lord Glenarvan agrees to pay for the release of the prisoners, in the mistaken belief that one of them is the missing Grant. Meanwhile, the intrepid rescuers eventually realise that they are going in the wrong direction and travel to New Zealand, where they are captured by Maoris but soon make a daring escape, which includes causing a volcano to erupt. Needless to say, they eventually find Grant, and learn that one of his crewmen had put the message in the bottle by forging Grant's handwriting. The
verdict: 'In Search of the Castaways' is good wholesome
family entertainment, and exactly what one would expect from a
