The lowdown: In 'The Omen', Gregory Peck stars as Robert Thorn, the US Ambassador to Italy, who is warned by Father Brennan (Patrick Troughton) that his son Damien is the Antichrist and was swapped for his real son at birth. Meanwhile, Damien uses his fledgling demonic powers to kill a number of people who could be a potential threat to his existence. Thorn dismisses Brennan's warnings of an impending apocalypse, and has him escorted from his office. However, Thorn's wife dies in a tragic accident, while Father Brennan also meets a grisly fate. Thorn starts to wonder if Brennan was not quite as mad as he seemed, and discovers that Damien has the mark of the devil - 666 - on his scalp. Thorn becomes convinced that his son is indeed the spawn of Satan, and decides that Damien must die. But of course Damien has other plans... Patrick Troughton gives one
of his greatest screen performances as Father Brennan, who is one of Damien's
first victims.
The
verdict: One of the best horror films of the last thirty years,
'The Omen' is still very effective and disturbing today. Sure,
