The lowdown:  'The Feathered Serpent' is a British children's drama set in ancient Mexico. A total of 12 episodes
and two seasons were broadcast on ITV1 from 21 June 1976 to 8 May 1978. The Aztec civilisation has worshipped
the god Quala, known as “The Feathered Serpent”, for many years. While human sacrifice was common in ancient
Mexico, Quala's worshippers are required to serve up less bloodthirsty offerings, such as fruit and flowers. But Quala
has been displaced by a new god, Teshcata, who is known as “The Smoking Mirror" and demands human sacrifices.
The evil and power-hungry priest Nasca (Patrick Troughton) is a devout follower of Teshcata, and has a falling out with
Emperor Kukulkhan (Tony Steedman) over human sacrifices. Nasca wants ten men to be offered up to Teshcata, but
Kukulkhan is only willing to let three be sacrificed. Nasca decides that Kukulkhan must die, and plots his demise...

Meanwhile, Kukulkhan is seeking to arrange a marriage between his daughter, Empress Chimalma (Diane Keen) and
Prince Heumac (Brian Deacon), and hopes that it will allow Quala to be reinstated as the Toltecs' god. Heumac has
come to the court of Kukulkhan with his young servant boy, Tozo (Richard Willis), but he has a rival for Chimalma's
affections, Mahoutec (Robert Gary). Nasca gets his mute henchman to kill Kukulkhan, leaving Chimalma to take the
throne, but Nasca also has plans for her. He has a drug that paralyses people but keeps them alive, and he intends
to use this to incapacitate Chimalma so he can seize power in her place.

This plan is thwarted by Heumac and Tozo, who find the cure and restore Chimalma to the throne before Nasca can
proceed with a plan to have Mahoutec attack and kill Heumec's troops, who are stationed nearby. However, Nasca
has one more trick up his sleeve, and he forces Chimalma to denounce Heumec as a traitor and order his sacrifice.
Heumec is taken to the top of a pyramid, and is to be sacrificed during a solar eclipse, but he turns the tables on
Nasca, who is apparently slain in the final episode of the first season. However, Nasca survives and returns in the
second season, where he continues to plot against the Aztec rulers. 'The Feathered Serpent' is a superb series that
features fine acting, great costumes and high production values for the time. While the series was aimed at children,
the complex plotting and political intrigue of the first season should appeal to people of all ages.

Who connections:  Richard Willis, who plays Tozo, will be familiar to Doctor Who fans as Varsh, the older brother
of Adric in Full Circle. George Cormack played King Dalios in The Time Monster and K'anpo in Planet of the Spiders,
while Robert Russell was the Caber in Terror of the Zygons.
