The lowdown:  'The Black Torment' is a British gothic horror film, starring John Turner as Sir Richard Fordyke, an
18th century lord who returns to his estate with his second wife, Lady Elizabeth (Heather Sears). Sir Richard is a
widower, and his first wife Anne had died some years ago after falling from a window. The newlyweds settle into the
Fordyke mansion, but it is not long before Sir Richard is accused of the brutal rape and murder of a young woman.
Witnesses swear that they saw him at the scene of the crime and she uttered his name with her dying breath, but
Sir Richard and Elizabeth were in London at the time. The ghost of Anne is also seen late at night, riding one of Sir
Richard's horses and shouting "Murderer!", and the local saddlemaker delivers a new saddle which he swears Sir
Richard had personally asked him to make, with the name "Anne" on it. Sir Richard denies that he had ordered the
saddle, but the locals begin to believe that the lord of the manor is a liar and murderer. Things look even bleaker for
Sir Richard when one of Elizabeth's maids is also murdered, and her lover blames him.  The missing family Bible
may hold the key to the mystery... Suffice it to say that Sir Richard is the innocent victim of a cunning scheme to
avenge the death of Anne, whom her sister believes was murdered by Sir Richard/

Who connections:  Patrick Troughton has a very brief role as Regis, Sir Richard's loyal ostler, while the film also
features Francis De Wolff (Agamemnon in The Myth Makers and Vasor in The Keys of Marinus) and Derek Newark
(Za in An Unearthly Child and Greg Sutton in Inferno).
