The
lowdown: 'Edward and Mrs Simpson' is a Thames Television production
that was first broadcast on ITV
from 6 November 1978. The
seven-part mini-series examines the controversial relationship between
King Edward
VIII (played by Edward Fox)
and a divorced American socialite, Wallis Simpson (Cynthia Harris). The
series begins
when the then David, Prince
of Wales, meets Simpson, who is still married at the time. Their relationship
continues
when David becomes King,
and insists that he will marry Wallis. This sparks a political and constitutional
crisis,
with much debate in Parliament
over the issue, and Edward ultimately abdicated in December 1936 in order
to
marry the woman he loved.
The
episode: 'Proposal' was the sixth episode of the series, and
sees Edward continuing to push for the right to
marry Wallis, despite the
fact that she has been divorced several times and the British Government
vehemently
opposes the union. Edward
proposes a morganatic marriage, whereby Wallis and any children of their
marraige
would not be entitled to
claim any of Edward's titles. However, this idea is rejected by Parliament,
and abdication
seems the only option for
the love-struck King. Patrick Troughton is at his best as Clement Attlee,
the leader of
the Labour Party, who meets
with Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and makes it clear that the Labour
faithful
would not support a marriage
between Edward and Wallis, even a morganitic marriage. Troughton's portrayal
of
Attlee is excellent, right
down to the bald wig he wears, and he looks almost the spitting image of
Attlee, who
of course went on to become
Prime Minister.
The
verdict: ''Edward and Mrs Simpson' is a superbly produced series
with high production values for the time,
and a generally excellent
cast. Indeed, the lavish attention to detail in capturing the look and
feel of the pre-World
War II era makes it hard
to believe that it is not a BBC production. The cast includes many actors
who went on
to become well-known for
other roles, including Nigel Hawthorne, Patricia Hodge and Hugh Fraser.
This series is
highly recommended for those
who enjoy quality period dramas and have an interest in a controversial
chapter
in the history of the British
monarchy.
