The
lowdown: 'The Friday Night Project' is a comedy-variety show
that is broadcast on Britain's Channel 4, on
Friday nights, strangely
enough. It first aired in February 2005, when it was hosted by Jimmy Carr,
Rob Rouse
and Sharon Horgan, although
Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr took over the hosting roles with the second
series.
The show features a different
guest host each week, plus a live band and regular segments such as the
Friday
Night News and Who Knows
The Most About The Guest Host. The humour of Collins and Carr is perhaps
not to
everyone's taste, as it
features a lot of gay jokes, but at times it can be very funny, and the
guest hosts tend to
get into the spirit of the
occasion and just join in the fun.
The first episode of season
four, aired on 5 January 2007, featured David Tennant as the guest host.
Tthe episode
had many Doctor Who references,
including a sketch starring Justin Lee Collins as the Doctor and David
Tennant
as his female companion
(complete with blonde wig). Other segments included Tennant and the show's
hosts
attending a pantomime (and
making a brief appearance on stage), a send-up of Celebrity Big Brother,
and a quiz
called Doctor Who Wants
to Be A Winner On Air (sending up another well-known quiz show) in which
the games
including Hanging Out With
Saddam Hussein. One of the high points of the show was the segment called
Watch
Out, Tennant's About, in
which two Doctor Who fans were set up at a fake auction. The first "victim"
was induced
to pay 10,000 pounds for
the original prop of K9 at a charity auction, when his seat was rigged
to give an electrical
charge. In the second set-up,
a fan discovered that his unique, only one in existence Key to Time prop
was being
auctioned.
David Tennant really looked
like he was enjoying himself, and proved to be a warm and extremely likeable
person
when simply being himself
rather than performing in a film or tv role. Indeed, he could easily take
on the role of hosting
his own tv show, he has
the sort of appealing personality that would make a show hosted by him
popular. Some
interesting facts were revealed
about him, including the fact that he is possibly the only Scottish actor
to never have
appeared in 'Taggart', and
that Billie Piper's nickname for him was 'David Ten-inch'.
Trivia:
Billie Piper was the guest host for the first episode of the second season.
