The lowdown:  'The Deputy' is a one-off 60-minute BBC drama that examines the public and private life of the fictional
Deputy Prime Minister and member for Birmingham, Bob Galway. Warren Clark is superb in the title role, and it comes
as no surprise that the role of Bob Galway was written specifically for him. Galway is assisted by his principal private
secretary, Christopher Williams (David Tennant), who keeps a sharp eye on Galway's two private secretaries (who are
having a not-so secret relationship). Galway also has to contend with the Prime Minister's high-efficient, no-nonsense
director of communications, Terri Leonard (the marvellous Dervla Kirwan), and Stephen Sharples (Jack Dee), a career
politician and Deputy Home Secretary, who aspires to the office of Home Secretary.

The story sees Galway deal with a range of problems as Deputy PM, including handling Prime Minister's Questions
in parliament while the PM is overseas, contending with the leaking of documents from his office, helping a member
of his electorate who has been denied compensation for the death of her boyfriend, and discovering that his own son
Carl has been arrested for supplying confidential Cabinet documents to an activist group called People for Privacy.
Meanwhile, government MP Angela Platt is scheming to oust the PM and replace him with Galway...

The verdict:  'The Deputy' is a marvellous drama that could easily have been developed into a full series. Most of the
characters have been given enough depth to warrant further exploration of their personal and professional lives, and the
show leaves you wanting to see more of Bob Galway and his team of civil servants.

Terri Leonard: Do I have to come in here every day to warn you what
your incompetence is doing to the government's reputation?
David Williams: No, you could send an email.
