The
lowdown: The Comedy Relief charity organisation was founded
in 1985, and has held the Red Nose Day
telethon every two years
since 1988. Each telethon features celebrity guests and spoofs of popular
TV shows -
these include Rowan Atkinson
and others playing the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who and the Curse
of Fatal
Death in 1999. The
16 March 2007 Red Nose Day telethon featured Catherine Tate in a number
of sketches,
including one featuring
her as school student Lauren Cooper, best known for the catchphrase "Am
I bovvered?".
In the Comic Relief sketch,
the students have a new teacher in the form of Mr Logan (David Tennant,
complete
with Scottish accent), who
is teaching them Shakespeare and being hassled by Lauren, who comments
on his
resemblance to a certain
Time Lord. He soon loses patience with the unruly student, quickly whips
out the sonic
screwdriver and turns her
into an action figure of Rose Tyler. It is a brief but entertaining sketch,
and full marks
to both Tate and Tennant
for agreeing to take part in such a worthy cause.
Trivia:
Comic Relief now has a presence in many countries, including Australia,
although Red Nose Day down
under is used to raise money
for research into sudden infant death syndrome.
