The lowdown:  'Juliet Bravo' is a British crime drama which centred on a female police inspector in charge of the police station
in the town of Hartley, Lancashire. A total of 88 episodes were broadcast on BBC1 from 30 August 1980 to 31 December 1985.
The series initially starred Stephanie Turner as Inspector Jean Darblay, who left after three seasons and was replaced by Anna
Carteret as Inspector Kate Longton for the final three seasons. The Hartley police investigate a range of crimes, ranging from
armed robbery, blackmail, hostage situations and counterfeiting, but Darblay and Longton also had to deal with the challenges
of being the station's only female police officer, including the initial skepticism and sexist attitudes of their male colleagues. The
show was rather slow-paced compared with police dramas of today, and the lack of violence and swearing made it good family
viewing. These qualities mean it still remains popular more than 20 years after the series ended.

The episode:  'The Intruder' was the 12th episode of the third season, and was broadcast on 20 November 1982. A seemingly
simple case of three young boys stealing sweets from a local store leads Inspector Darblay to a much more serious crime. Dick
Graydon, the father of one of the boys, runs a car repair shop and is still bitter about the failure of his previous business. Graydon
befriends a recent arrival to Hartley, Frankie Miller (Colin Baker), not realising that Miller has an extensive criminal record. Miller
has damaged his car in an accident, and borrows Graydon's classic Jensen to rob the local betting shop. He convinces Graydon
to give a sworn statement to the police to the effect that they were both at the local pub at the time of the robbery. Darblay is not
convinced about the alibi, convinced that Miller is her man. She warns Graydon of the consequences of lying to the police, but he
is determined to help his friend despite knowing he is guilty. Darblay visits Graydon's wife and tries to persuade her that it is in
her husband's interests to tell the truth. Mrs Graydon eventually tells the police about her husband's involvement in the crime, in
order to protect her young son.

Who connections:  Many actors associated with Doctor Who appeared in 'Juliet Bravo' over its six-year run, including series
regulars Nicholas Courtney and Mark Strickson. Others include David Daker (The Time Warrior and Nightmare of Eden), Geoffrey
Bayldon (Creature from the Pit), Bernard Horsfall (Planet of the Daleks and The Deadly Assassin, amongst many others), and
David Collings (Revenge of the Cybermen, Robots of Death and Mawdryn Undead).
