The
lowdown: Now in its 11th season, 'Doctors' is a
daytime drama which is broadcast on BBC One, and
premiered on 26 March 2000.
The series centres on the professional and personal lives of the staff
of the Mill
Health Centre, a family
medical practices in the Midlands, and the on-campus surgery at the University
of
Letherbridge. The two medical
clinics are the main location for each episode, but other locations are
featured
occasionally, and later
seasons featured many plots focusing on the university. Like all long-running
dramas,
'Doctors' features an ever-changing
cast of characters, and both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy have been
guest stars on several occasions.
The
episode: 'The Romantics' is the 124th episode of the 11th
season, and it was broadcast on 14 October
2009. Colin Baker features
as the rather lecherous Professor Claybourne Jarvis, who is the head of
the School
of English at the university.
It opens with the Professor waiting to meet Dr Deborah Cavanagh, who is
giving a
lecture on the Romantics
era of English literature. Cavanagh had been his student years ago, and
he reveals
that his affection for her
is much deeper than that of a teacher and his former pupil. Larry Bryan,
the security
officer who mans the front
desk at the School of English, had been to school with Cavanagh and she
had been
his first love, and it is
soon clear that he still has feelings for her.
Dr Cavanagh seems distracted
during the lecturer, and refers to somone named 'Larry', but she recovers
from
this faux pas by explaining
that Larry is her pet name for Shelley. Professor Jarvis of course is not
convinced,
and fears he has a rival
for her affections. When Cavanagh has a dizzy spell after the lecture,
he takes her to
the campus surgery, and
he warns off Larry, telling him that Dr Cavanagh and himself are "an item".
He then
offers Cavanagh a senior
position in the School of English, and tries to seduce her, but she is
not in the least
bit interested. He then
tells her that Larry is married with children, in a final bid attempt to
turn her against his
younger rival. Dr Cavanagh
unfortunately believes him and storms off, but Larry follows and explains
that Jarvis
had been lying, while she
says that she could never be interested in 'Captain Pugwash'.
