The lowdown: 'Rachel's Dream' is a 30-minute drama which was broadcast on 10 May 1992 as part of a Channel 4 anthology series called Video Fantasies. It starred the young Christopher Eccleston and Kate Beckinsale (both in one of their earliest acting roles). It is set in an unspecified future that is dominated by technology. Rachel is watching a large bank of video monitors in her sister's flat, where she is constantly bombarded by advertisements for a company owned by Ridley McCloud, a wealthy industrialist who has made his money by storing toxic waste illegally. Rachel's sister Vicki has just secured a lucrative contract with McCloud, who wants Rachel to go to his party dressed as Marilyn Monroe. Meanwhile, Rachel has a dream in which a man from an anti-pollution poster comes to life and tells her where McCloud is storing the toxic waste. The authorities raid McCloud's premises and the man in Rachel's dream returns through the video monitors to his own world. This is an interesting drama that had cutting-edge special effects for its time, and the environmental themes explored in the story are still very relevant today. The video is slightly out of sync with the audio, but 'Rachel's Dream' is very hard to find and it is worth watching, particularly for fans of Eccleston or Beckinsale.
