The
lowdown: 'Linda Green' is a comedy/drama from the BBC, starring
Liza Tarbuck in the title role. Linda is a full-figured
single woman in her 30s
who is still looking for the right man. Much of her life revolves around
going out with her friends,
meeting new men and singing
at the local club. Linda often has some difficult relationships with men,
and they often end
badly, but her failure to
meet the right man does not stop her from living life to the full. The
show has often been described
as a British version of
'Sex in the City', but in reality the shows are poles apart.
Christopher Eccleston features
in the first episode of the series, in the dual role of identical twins
Neil and Tom Sherry.
Linda has been dating Neil
but decides to break up with him. Neil's brother Tom shows up at her flat,
and Linda discovers
that Tom is kind, sensitive
and compassionate, whereas Neil is basically a prick. Tom also does not
have a tattoo that
says 'Eat me.' Linda begins
a relationship with Tom, to the complete surprise of her friends, but Neil
isn't quite ready to
move on. The episode ends
with Neil and Tom fighting outside Linda's flat.
The
verdict: More of a drama than comedy, 'Linda Green' is a well-written
and entertaining look at the life of a single
woman in Manchester. However,
it is not to everyone's taste, and is probably more appealling to women
than men.
Nevertheless, the writing
and acting are excellent; Liza Tarbuck in particuliar is superb, and like
Dawn French before her,
she shows that women don't
have to have a size eight figure to be sexy.
Trivia:
'Linda Green' won the TV Comedy Programme of the Year award in the Television
and Radio Industries Club
Awards for 2002.
